8 Tips for a Successful Moving Day

Even the best planners can find moving days stressful. Here are some tips to help your household relocation day run smoothly.

1. Finish Your Packing the Day Before

You'll have enough to do on moving day without finishing your packing. Leave only last-minute items, such as toiletries and perishable foods, for moving day morning.

2. Get a Good Night's Sleep

You'll want to rise early on moving day and feel refreshed. Go to bed early, but not so early that you can't sleep. Avoid blue light from electronic devices and cell phones for the last two hours before bedtime. Also, avoid consuming caffeine after lunch the day before. Practice meditation and mindful breathing to calm your mind.

3. Pack Your Essentials

Pack an essentials bag and a cooler ahead of time. Your essentials bag will contain items you'll need immediately in your new home, such as toiletry items, cleaners, diapers, a change of clothes, medications, towels, washcloths, and pajamas. Pack bottled water, grab-and-go high-protein snacks, sandwiches, and more in your cooler.

Place the essentials bag and cooler aside in a safe place so you don’t pack them on the moving truck. You'll want to take them in the car with you.

4. Make a List

Writing down a to-do list for moving days in advance may seem time-consuming, but you'll save time and headaches in the long run. Check off items as you complete them.

Your moving checklist might include items such as:

  • Empty the fridge and freezer
  • Take out the last trash
  • Make pet and child care arrangements. You may be taking pets or children to the home of a friend or relative. Or, you may have someone watching them and keeping them out of the way in your home.
  • Greet the movers. Walk them through your home, pointing out fragile items.
  • Have water on hand for movers
  • Make a final sweep for any belongings or furniture. Look in all the closets and cabinets.
  • Arrive at the new place to greet the movers and show them your floor plan.
  • Unpack only the essentials the first night. You'll be tired and don't need to do everything at once. Do consider putting curtains or other coverings on your bedroom window to help you sleep well the first night in your new home.

5. Charge Your Phone

You don't know how much you may need your phone on moving day. Charge it fully the night before and pack the chargers in your essentials bag.

6. Stay Hydrated

Moving day involves a lot of activity, so drink plenty of water. Also, be sure to eat to keep your strength up.

7. Relax

Moving days can be long. Once you've arrived in your new home and unpacked the essentials, find a way to relax. Take a nice hot bath, meditate, do yoga, take a walk, or go out to eat in your new neighborhood.
