The Essential Home Moving Checklist

Now that you've decided to make a household move, there's a lot of work to be done. With so many items to cross off your to-do list, it can all seem pretty overwhelming. An excellent way to stay organized during a move is to create a checklist of the various tasks in order of priority. This way, you can get visual confirmation of what you've done and what's left to finish.

Fortunately, we're here to help with the essential home moving checklist. While you may need to adjust or update the list for your own needs, you can use this article as a general outline. Let's get moving!

Section One: Utilities

One way to ensure a smooth transition is to verify that utilities are up and running in your new place. Additionally, you should contact your current utility providers to let them know when to stop service. The best time to start this process is at least two weeks before your move date.

  • Compile a list of all the utilities you'll need, such as water, electricity, sewer/garbage, internet.

  • Call and create accounts for each utility with your new address. In some cases, you may be able to transfer services from your current account.

  • Set the activation date as a day or two before your move to be safe.

  • Set the cancellation date of your existing utilities as one or two days after your move date if you're running behind.

  • Once you arrive at your new location, test all utilities by checking light switches, plumbing, etc. If something isn't turned on, contact the provider as soon as possible.

Section Two: Packing and Unpacking

Moving is trying and stressful because there are so many pieces to bring to your new place. When packing, consider how you'll be unpacking once you arrive and plan accordingly. Some foresight can save you a lot of headaches later on.

  • Get more boxes than you think you'll need. It's better to have a buffer than come up short.

  • Consider a color-coded system for your belongings. For example, boxes with red labels go to the kitchen, boxes with blue to the bedroom, etc. You can mark boxes with tape or permanent markers, and be sure to label each side so that you can view it from any angle.

  • Pack essential items last and make sure that they're easy to access—for example, dishes, toiletries, etc. Have a few changes of clothes ready to go as well. One option is to pack a suitcase for several days so that all your essentials are together.

  • Don't forget about phone chargers and other electronics!

  • Have a plan for what to do with the boxes and packing materials after your move. Store them in a room or give them to others about to move.

Section Three: Miscellaneous Moving Items

Here are some other elements that can get forgotten when you move:

  • Change the locks in your new home if they haven't been changed already.

  • Clean your belongings as you put them in their place. This way, your items start fresh in a new home.

  • Orient yourself in the neighborhood by driving around to different stores. Give yourself some extra time to get used to the commute and travel times.
