Packing Clothes, Shoes, and Accessories: What You Need to Know

When preparing for a move, packing all your belongings is challenging. One of the more tedious aspects of packing is boxing up all your clothes, shoes, and accessories. Fortunately, there are some sanity-saving tips you can follow to make packing these items easier for your residential move.

Get Rid of Items You No Longer Wear

Start by taking inventory of your closet and pulling out any items you no longer need or wear. As a general rule, if you haven't worn something in the past year, it's probably safe to get rid of (assuming it's not a clothing item or accessory you're keeping purely for sentimental value).

Donating or selling items you no longer wear can free up space in your moving truck while making packing and unpacking a bit easier.

Invest in Wardrobe Boxes and Garment Bags

How do you go about packing your clothes? A wardrobe moving box can be highly convenient for items already on hangers because you can keep your clothes on their hangers and simply move them straight into the box. In a pinch, you can also use garbage bags with a similar purpose; simply bag up your clothes from the bottom while they're still on hangers in your closet, then secure them with a drawstring at the top. Then, place the bag of clothes in a moving box and label the box.

Garment bags can be handy for clothing items and accessories, not on hangers. To minimize creasing and wrinkling, try rolling your clothes instead of folding them before you place them in bags.

Save Space With Vacuum Storage

If space is a concern, you can reduce the volume of your packed clothing by using vacuum bags. With these, you can load your clothing items and accessories into a bag and then use a vacuum with a hose attachment to remove excess air and compress the items. This allows you to store most items flat and maximize space for your move. When you arrive at your new place, simply open the vacuum-sealed bags to remove your items and restore them to their original condition. If wrinkles are present, launder as needed.

Stuff Shoes to Protect Them

You should take special care when packing shoes to protect them from losing shape or damage. Stuff them with newspaper or similar material to help them maintain their shape. Pack shoes away in their original boxes or individual bags whenever possible (plastic bags work well here). You can also pack shoes in suitcases; just try to stick to suitcases on roller wheels for more accessible transport, as the weight of shoes can add up quickly otherwise!
