Moving Near the Holiday Time: Tips for Success

Moving at the holidays can make a complicated time of year even more complicated. It’s easy to get overwhelmed between packing boxes, buying gifts, and spending time with loved ones! However, there are many things you can do to make your holidays and your moving experience more manageable. Here's what you need to know.

1. Plan In Advance

Plan carefully for your holidays and your moving experience. Knowing in advance when you need to complete your shopping, decluttering your home, wrapping gifts, and so on will help you stay organized and avoid falling behind. Make a timeline and communicate with other family members about that timeline to ensure everyone is on the same page.

2. Go Easy On Yourself

This is not the holiday season to insist on inviting all your friends and family to your house for a holiday dinner! Instead, plan a light holiday celebration with the immediate members of your household. If friends or family invite you to their house for a big holiday celebration, take them up on it!  Let someone else do the holiday decorating, meal planning, etc.

3. Label All Holiday and Gift Boxes Clearly

Suppose you're packing all of your holiday decorations and gifts into boxes before you move. In that case, it's important you can find all the boxes later when it's time to start decorating and engaging in holiday celebrations. Label all holiday and gift-related boxes clearly. Keep them together in one spot.

Think about everything you'll need for your holiday celebrations, including kitchen items, candles, special napkins, and so on. Then ack all these items together, if possible, to make locating them easier.

4. Work With a Professional Moving Company

You can make your life easier by working with a professional moving company during your upcoming relocation! With someone else doing the moving, you can focus on your holiday celebrations. Find a residential moving company with a good reputation that will provide full-service help during your upcoming relocation.

5. Budget, Budget, Budget

Moving can be expensive - and so can the holidays. Budgeting carefully for these upcoming events will help reduce stress and ensure that you have the resources to move forward with all your plans. Make a holiday budget and a separate moving budget. When making your budgets, allocate money for each type of expense, from moving boxes to gifts to food and movers.

This is one of the reasons that working with a professional moving company will be very helpful. In addition, reputable moving companies should have transparent billing practices, so you'll know how much you can expect to spend on your upcoming relocation.

Hidden fees could be a big problem at this time of year, so take care to work with a moving company that will be upfront about all their charges. If a mover's fees seem like they're too low, ask yourself why. Make sure that when you're comparing movers, you're making an apples-to-apples comparison of their services.

6. Save Holiday-Related Delivery Boxes

At this time of year, you'll no doubt be receiving a lot of holiday-related delivery boxes. Save those boxes! They'll come in handy for packing for your move.
