5 Ways to Maintain Organization After Your Move

Even though a household move can seem overwhelming, it's an exciting time to begin a new chapter in your life.

Maintaining organization is essential if you want your move to go as smoothly as possible.

Getting those moving boxes to your new house is only half the battle. The other half of the challenge is unpacking and staying organized after your move.

Continue reading for some tips on maintaining calm while settling into a new home.

Prioritize Your Goals

Break up the unpacking process into two phases: get all the essentials out of the boxes and then unpack each room in order of importance.

When you set the priorities before your move, you can start working right away once you get there.

Start With Your Essentials

An essentials box is the first step to an organized unpacking process. When you have your essentials immediately available, you will not have to spend time searching through boxes to find the items you need right away.

Your family's essentials box should include the following items for your first week in your new house:

  • Toilet paper

  • Towels

  • Prescription medications

  • Deodorant

  • Shampoo, conditioner, and soap

  • Paper towels

  • Disposable plates and silverware

  • Dishwasher and laundry detergent

  • Electronics chargers

  • Bedding

  • A few days of clothing

Aside from the family's essentials box, each family member should have their own boxes marked with clear instructions and labels, like "Ken’s essentials."

If you do this, you will be able to find your must-haves immediately to stay comfortable while unpacking.

After you've unpacked the essentials, you can move on to the rest of the packing.

Room by Room

The process of unpacking a whole house of boxes can seem overwhelming. But, if you break it down into manageable sections with precise starts and stops, the task will be easier to handle.

Make sure you follow the list you developed before the move. Put the list in a central location, so it's easy to refer to. Then cross off the items as you complete them and continue to the next task.

Charge Your Electronics

As you get settled, you will depend on your phone and possibly your laptop, so setting up your charging cords early is essential. For instance, you might need it to look up a hardware store or order takeout. Don't wait for your battery to run out before setting up your charging area.

Moving Success!

When trying to stay organized after a move, the best way to keep on top of everything is to be meticulous. Move through your tasks in a logical order and be persistent. Then, it won't take long for you to get everything unpacked.
