A Guide to Moving and Packing Supplies

There are many benefits to being prepared before a move. First, being prepared can help reduce fear and anxiety. Second, help ease some stress by being prepared for your upcoming residential move.

You will need more time than you think to get organized and pack for your upcoming move. Start planning early and take time to create a packing and moving station complete with all the supplies you need in one place. Also, make a spot in the home to stage packed boxes. Having a designated staging area will make it easier to grab items and get them loaded onto the truck.

Below are all the necessary moving and packing supplies you will need for your move.

Boxes

Boxes are a moving necessity. You will need boxes in all sizes, including small, medium, large, extra-large, wardrobe, and television. It is best to keep boxes in the approximate shape and size to make stacking in a truck easier. Do not overpack boxes because they will not neatly stack because the top is bubbling up.

Alternatives to buying boxes include picking up boxes from a local grocery or liquor store. The boxes these locations receive in shipments are sturdy and sometimes come with dividers to help packing glassware.

Packing Materials

The second most important tool you need when packing to move is the packing materials. Packing materials help protect your belongings when loaded in a box, reducing breakage or damage while in transit. Packing materials include Styrofoam peanuts, packing paper, clean newsprint paper, and bubble wrap. Clothing and extra towels and blankets also work to help pack fragile items into boxes.

Tape

There are multiple types of tape available, all of which can help you when packing to move. For example, shipping tape seals boxes while masking tape or painter’s tape makes it easy to label containers. Duct tape or strapping tape is great to have to help reinforce heavy boxes. Have multiple rolls of each to ensure you do not run out, and do not forget to purchase a tape dispenser or scissors.

Notebook and Pen

The notebook is ideal for keeping your moving checklists, timelines, receipts, and other essential moving-related paperwork. Documents, such as a truck rental agreement, hotel reservations, travel itineraries, and more, can also be stored in the notebook. Keep the notebook with you in a bag or a box separate from the items placed on the truck.

Additional Supplies

Additional packing supplies you may want to have ready before starting to pack include:

  • Scissors or box cutters

  • Permanent markers

  • “Fragile” labels

  • Rope, bungee cords, or zip ties

  • Stretch wrap to wrap furniture

  • Mattress bags

  • Hand truck or dolly

  • Furniture pads

  • Lock
