Charities That Will Pick Up Your Donations

One of the keys to a successful move is to de-clutter beforehand. You may have items you don't want to move but still have some wear left. One way to dispose of these items is to give them to a charity. Donating to charity helps the environment by repurposing and reusing items. It also may help you save on your taxes.

Some charities will pick up your donation, making your life much easier. Here's a guide to charities that will pick up donations when you are preparing for your residential move.

Salvation Army

The Salvation Army offers several programs to help those in need. The organization takes cars, furnishings, clothing, and household goods. You can schedule a donation online or by calling the Salvation Army truck.

Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity's mission is to ensure every person has a safe home. The organization will accept gently used furniture, appliances, and housewares to sell in their ReStore. Profits from the sales go to help provide safe homes to families. Many Habitat for Humanity ReStores will pick up large items.

Goodwill

Goodwill places the items donated through its bins, centers, and pickups in its stores for sale. The proceeds from the sales go to support employment training and job placement services. Some donation centers will pick up large items.

Goodwill typically accepts clothing, shoes, housewares, books, and art.

PickUpMyDonation.com

PickUpMyDonation.com is an online service that directs you to charity and non-profit partners who will pick up donations within your zip code. You type in your zip code, and other information about the gift, and the platform sends a request to its non-profit partners. The non-profit partners then call within 48 hours to schedule the donation. If no partner accepts the offering, the service will forward information to a junk pickup service; however, you can always refuse the service.

Furniture Bank Network

The Furniture Bank Network is an online platform that directs you to social organizations that reuse and repurpose furniture. You choose an organization by clicking a location on the map and then going to the organization's website. You can schedule a pickup from there or by calling the number listed there.

AMVETS National Service Foundation

AMVETS serves US war veterans and active-duty service personnel. The organization has thrift stores in 22 states. The organization sells the goods and uses the proceeds to advocate for veterans and assist them in finding jobs and gaining their VA benefits. You can schedule a pickup by filling out an online form.

The Arc

The Arc supports adults and children with developmental and intellectual disabilities to live full lives. The organization has about 600 state and local chapters, many of which operate thrift stores. You can enter your location on the website to find one near you.

The Arc accepts cars, furniture, housewares, clothing, electronics, books, and games.

Pickup Please

Pickup Please supports two veterans' charities: Vietnam Veterans of America and Veterans Voice of America. The organization accepts small items that require only one person to lift. These include small furnishings, clothes, small household items, electronics, books, sports equipment, tools, lawn care items, and toys. You can schedule a pickup online.
